Passing

Is it just me or is anyone else bothered by the relatively recent adoption of the word 'passed' to replace the word 'died'.  I am looking forward to reading the following news report in the local news paper:

"The medical school reported today the passing of 168 students.  Under other semantic circumstances, this would be cause for mourning.  However, since none of the students died and this announcement relates to the latest results of the licensing exam, it is cause for celebration."

Cheers.

Puberty

“Understanding what causes early onset of puberty in New Jersey girls is crucial to improving their health ...”  This quote is from Elisa Bandera, MD at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.  There are some interesting implications in that quote.  For instance, "crucial to improving their health" implies that  there is something abnormal with early onset of puberty in New Jersey girls.  This also suggests that pharmaceutical companies would be interested in developing drugs that could treat this condition.  Maybe they are just looking for another reason to medicate another segment of the population.  I'm 55 and my wife is 46.  Neither of us is on any medication.  When either of us go to the doctor for a yearly 'well-person' checkup, the doctor is amazed that we aren't on any medications.  I wonder why no one has noticed that boys in New Jersey have started to enter puberty earlier?

It's a clam's life.

This just in from the editors of the journal Nature: "A clam dredged up off the Icelandic coast that seems to have been there for as much as 410 years has been hailed as the longest-lived animal ever discovered. Of course, it might have lived even longer if it hadn't been dredged up and given to age researchers…"  DUH
